Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, the company was taken private by private equity firm Thoma Bravo in a $12.3 billion all-cash transaction that closed in August 2021 and remains privately held. Proofpoint sells to large enterprises, government agencies, and small and medium businesses, counting a majority of the Fortune 100 among its customers. Its detection is built on the Nexus AI engine, which combines threat intelligence, language models, relationship graphs, behavioral analysis, and computer vision.
